Pair Antique Japanese Satsuma Pottery Rakan Vases by Hododa Meiji Period

Antique Japanese Hododa Rakan Vases. A pair of Japanese Satsuma ware vases dating to the Meiji period c1900.

They have mask head handles and the Shimazu mon in gold to the necks. They are of pottery body as expected for Satsuma and they are signed to the base for Hododa. Hododa was a merchant as well as a workshop and was responsible for a wide range of Satsuma export ware including some very fine examples.

This pair are richly decorated in gold and red with numerous rakan and a dragon to each vase. The dragons are detailed with moriage clay dots which are raised. Note the faces which are individually drawn and nuanced with a lot of detail for this style of vase. The bodies are also slightly ribbed, but so gently as it doesn't really show in the images.

A very decorative pair with excellently detailed faces. Minor wear and light gilt rubbing, some loss of gilt to handles.

On one vase the red underglaze colour has fired unusually around the rim, perhaps from slightly hotter than intended temperature. Mark to one vase less clear than the other. Crazing to the ground as expected for Satsuma pottery.

Height: 24.8 cm (9 3/4 inch). Width: 12.7 cm (5 inch). Weight: 1980 grams (before packing).
